Diversity and equity have been in the spotlight on educational policy agendas and on college and university campuses across the United States. In particular, there has been a renewed focus on the determinant role and importance of mentoring for underrepresented populations along the academic pipeline from undergraduate students to faculty. Accordingly, the principal focus of this research is on viewing the mentoring of underrepresented faculty through the lens of strategic leadership in relation to diversity as a process and outcome. Based on an analysis of interviews with selected scholars of color, it provides a tapestry of experiences and contributions that can be engaged in both formal and informal strategies for the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academy.
