Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

This paper examines the perspectives of Latinx parents in San Antonio, Texas on school choice policy. It investigates the reasons why an increasing number of Latinx parents in San Antonio choose to transfer their children from public schools to charter schools, religious schools, or even to homeschool their children. I sought to determine how parents understand school choice in the education of their children, including what they perceive as advantages and disadvantages of their choice options. While most of the parents’ concerns about public schools may be legitimate, this study examines the realities and the contradictions surrounding school choice policies, especially as they relate to Latinx communities in San Antonio, Texas.
