Stories to Tell . . . : Identity, Community, and Authority in the Early Childhood Classroom

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 3

Abstract

This presentation looks closely at the role of story as it comes to life in early childhood classroom settings. Using pedagogical narration, two teachers explore a wide range of practices around story in the classroom with young children, making meaning around the knowledges that emerge. Diverse practices of storytelling illustrate identities, relationships, connections, and advocacies made possible by the role of story within the “official” curriculum. Through honoring and investigating story, this study illustrates the emergence of children’s leadership, empowerment, and authorship.
