Utilizing HSLS 09 (NECS) database, the current study explores predictors of 9th graders’ mathematics and science aspiration and postsecondary education plan. Individual variables including self-efficacy, values and interest, and social variables such as family socioeconomic status, teacher practice and treatment are tested for their predictability for 9th graders’ work habit, plans for taking math and science courses in high school and aspiration for future education. SES, college-value, math-utility-value, science-self-efficacy, peer-value, school-connectedness appear to be consistent significant predictors of work-habit, number of years of mathematics coursework 9th grade expects to take in high school, number of years mathematics coursework 9th grader expects to take and the probability of 9th graders’ enrollment in either Advancement Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate courses.
