Student protests in response to Charles Murray’s visit to Middlebury College in spring 2016 have been the subject of national media attention, the inspiration for a joint statement on truth-seeking, and the subject of written statements from both Middlebury faculty and students. This paper considers what can be learned from these events with respect to fulfilling the moral aims of higher education. Specifically, the paper explores student conceptions of justice and fairness, faculty concerns for free inquiry, and the possibility of using clashes such as these to further moral education on our campuses.
