"I Haven't Just Developed, I've Transformed": Student Teaching Abroad and Developing Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices

Abstract

There is a need for teacher educators and education programs to provide pre-students with opportunities to develop cultural competencies and Culturally Responsive Teaching. To this end, investigating practices for developing these skills and competencies is important. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate these competencies gained by student teachers completing there 16-week internship in an International/American school in Costa Rica. Findings illustrate students’ development of cultural and global competencies, inclusion of culturally relevant teaching and pedagogy, and understanding of the needs of English Language Learners. This study is relevant to the enhancement of teaching, development of courses and curricula, and understanding the cultural and global growth of student teachers in an international internship.
