Abstract

In this paper we introduce and explore learning in our early development of "Re-Shape", a mobility centered learning environment for social studies teachers. This environment encompasses: 1) a set of dynamic, map-based visualization tools developed by the 1st author that extend the use of personal mobility as relevant material for teaching (Taylor & Hall, 2013) and 2) activities that engage students with ways of seeing themselves in relation to local historical, political, racial and built urban environments. In other words, this environment integrates concepts and methods from the learning sciences, social studies and information visualization to "re-shape" how students see their personal and aggregate mobility through their local environment in ways that support established pedagogical goals of social studies education.
