A Review of Intersectionality as a Lens Across Equity-Based Research in Education

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan East Room

Abstract

The purpose of our paper is to examine the conceptual and methodological integration of intersectionality across equity-based research communities. In our review, we synthesize the application of intersectionality across six sub-disciplines of education research. We examine the extent to which conceptual and empirical analyses adequately acknowledge the Black feminist origins of intersectionality. We also examine the identity markers included and/or privileged in the literature and whether authors interrogate their own intersecting identities as suggested by Black feminist epistemology. We discuss implications for future equity-based research rooted in intersectionality by exploring how conceptual misunderstanding and methodological uncertainty hinder interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary collaboration in the field of education.
