Drawing What It Means to Be a Reader and a Scholar

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

In this conceptual paper, I discuss the development of drawings as the covers for literacy journals. Commonly populated with simple shapes and words, these covers became a space to explore the nuances of what it means to read young adult literature, to critique the notion of measuring students, and to show the conflicts and promise of teacher education. The paper includes a brief explication of cover art for three different publications. I conclude with a discussion of how these drawings serve as public invitations for looking and considering changes and challenges facing teacher educators, English teachers, and literacy advocates.
