The People of Disability Accommodations: Student Perspectives

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

In this paper, I examine the significance of relationships that students with disability accommodations have with school personnel in ensuring their accommodation needs are met. The paper is part of a larger study that explores how student participation in meetings about accommodations shaped their understandings of disability and identity. Across context, students spoke to the significance of people involved in the decisions and implementations of accommodations. Various school personnel, from teachers to aides, are responsible for ensuring that accommodation needs are met and for weighing in during IEP, 504, or Health Plan meetings. Adults have tremendous perceived and actual power in the lives of the students they serve. For this reason, I foreground the experiences of students with these adults.
