This study looked beyond the self in self-regulated learning (SRL), recognizing that others (e.g., parents) play a role in adolescents’ developing SRL. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was used to identify SRL strategies and what roles parents play in the adolescents’ acquisition of those strategies. Quantitative results showed the top rated strategy was rehearsal, and the lowest rated strategy was planning. Qualitative results examined parents’ and adolescents’ descriptions of a variety of themes concerning parent involvement in homework and studying. Mixed methods results connected qualitative explanations of the six SRL strategies from the quantitative survey. Findings can help parents strengthen their connection with education, especially in public schools, and improve their adolescents’ possibilities of achieving their dreams.
