Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

Families are a powerful source of inspiration and support for Latinas seeking STEM careers. Research on persistence in STEM has reached new heights, yet there is still much to learn about what it takes for Latinas achieve their dreams and persist in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Questions related to what factors and influences impact Latinas’ persistence along the educational pipeline abound. Exactly, what does it take for Latinas to succeed in STEM majors? Using testimonios, this study shares counter stories of resilience and pathways taken by Latinas who have persisted in their pursuit of STEM careers and brings to light the impact of la familia (family) and familismo on their persistence at a predominantly White institution.
