While educational equity is a fundamental pillar of the American education system, persistent opportunity and achievement gaps for disadvantaged and minority students and their peers continue to pose a myriad of challenges for district and school leader. By examining the extent to which districts establish equitable learning environments, district leaders can work toward closing the opportunity gap. Grounded in critical race theory, this comparative policy analysis explores the extent to which one school division’s policies compare to six other districts. Using an adaption of the Great Lakes Equity Center Policy Tool to analyze board of education policies, the authors found the district needs to reform policies to explicitly create an equitable learning environment that is safe and welcoming for all students.
