The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the experiences of high-ability, Black, females from low-income homes college preparation process to identify influences from various family, school, and community environments. To explore these experiences, the researcher conducted phenomenological study composed of in-depth individual interviews of ten Black female college freshmen and two focus groups of six of those ten freshmen. The participants answered questions about their experiences, relationships, and resources across varying contexts that influenced their sense of preparedness for college. Of this data, the participants discussed the roles of teachers and school counselors played in their preparation for college which is explored in this paper. School counselor and teacher collaborations will be discussed.
