This collaborative research documents the collective inquiry endeavor of members of the school-university partners working together to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics through mathematical modeling in the elementary grades, with attention to social justice. The team of teachers and university researchers collaboratively designed a Lesson Study around implementing a mathematical modeling task related to their communities’ needs. The Professional Development School-University project team used Lesson Study as a way to engage teachers in design research where they collaboratively planned lessons that went through iterative cycles of implementation and revision in multiple classrooms including four first grade classrooms and one fourth grade classroom.
