Systemic Analysis of the Lived Experience of Women Faculty at a Public University: Implications for Power Reproduction, Disruption, and Transformation in the Academy

Abstract

Our study seeks to make visible, through the lived experiences of women faculty across rank and appointment types, a systemic perspective on how power operates to maintain and reproduce gender inequity at a public institution of higher education. We analyzed focus group and individual interviews among women faculty at a Land Grant University to map a representation of the intersectional systems that shape women faculty experiences across identities. These dynamic and interacting systems include micro-cultures, structures and policies, climate and culture, and higher administration. Our findings also illuminate how institutional systems of gender inequity can be disrupted and transformed across public institutions of education.
