Unlearning to Listen and Listening to Learn: Digital Storytelling With Indigenous Canadian and Vietnamese Youth

Abstract

Through an anti-colonial lens, this paper explores participatory digital storytelling as a methodology for unlearning and listening to the citizenship experiences of middle school students in a First Nations community in Canada and an urban community in Viet Nam. The students were involved in a virtual exchange project examining young people’s perspectives and experiences with citizenship in a global digital age and the ways that engaging with digital technologies through intercultural learning can influence their evolving views and identities. The findings indicate that while the process and product of digital storytelling can reveal much about students’ identities, research conversations before and after the digital storytelling project reveal complex and sometimes contradictory images of students’ citizenship identities.
