Educating Immigrant Youth for Active Political Participation

Abstract

This study examines racial group differences in political participation among immigrant youth and explores factors associated with their political participation. Using data from the Stanford Civic Purpose Project (Stanford Civic), this study employed 2-way Factorial ANOVA and multiple linear regression method. While there was no significant difference in political participation among different immigrant youth by racial groups and immigration generations, two majority immigrant racial groups, Asian and Latino immigrant youth, were influenced by different environmental and identity-related factors that may affect political participation. The findings suggest that researchers and educators need to consider this heterogeneity among immigrant youth and provide effective ways to empower immigrant youth from diverse backgrounds for active citizenship.
