Session Summary

Enhancing Parents' and Policy-Makers' Assessment Literacy: Considering the Options

Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Westin New York at Times Square, Floor: Ninth Floor, Royale Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Because of the profound impact that assessment-related decisions frequently have on instructional practices and, thus, on students’ learning, those who are involved in making such decisions should obviously do so knowledgeably. Happily, a number of organizations have recently turned their attention to increasing the assessment literacy of teachers and school administrators. Less happily, two groups have been largely neglected in this push for educators’ increased assessment literacy, namely, educational policymakers and parents of school-age children. The objective of this interactive symposium is to identify practicable and readily implementable tactics for enhancing the assessment literacy of those two groups.
