Community colleges are critical but understudied sites of access to higher education and career preparation for students who grew up speaking languages other than English. Given the dominance of English as the language of instruction in the US, and the fact that both “language minority” students and “English learners” are defined by language-related criteria, understanding the language and literacy issues facing these students is critical. It is also necessary to situate those issues in the context of students’ pathways into, through, and beyond their community college studies, including structural and institutional contexts that impact students’ language, literacy, and academic development. This panel engages with various notions of “pathways” to investigate relevant language and literacy dimensions and broader contexts.
