Session Type: Symposium
New York City is a fascinating context in which to examine bilingual education today. As a city that has historically supported bilingual education, there is much to learn from the macro and micro structures that have allowed for the inclusion of students’ home languages, while also identifying the challenges that remain. The four papers in this symposium delve into the following areas: the role of leadership and teacher professional development to sustain dual language bilingual programs; the city’s aim to expand dual language bilingual programs to a wider variety of languages with insights from a new Hebrew program; and an analysis of a bilingual elementary school’s multilingual ecology and the translanguaging practices of Kindergarten students involved in guided play.
