Session Type: Symposium
The AERA 2018 conference challenges us to “learn from scholars who examine the histories of struggles for and over public education” especially related to communities who have been traditionally marginalized. Prof. Sally Tomlinson, with her 1982 groundbreaking book, “The Sociology of Special Education”, has examined how race, class, and special and inclusive education, have impacted the lives of individuals thought to be low achievers or to have disabilities in terms of a global economy. Through the lens of sociology, Prof. Tomlinson continues to challenge us to recognize the complex issues involved in addressing the every changing society in which we live. This symposium will examine the contribution of Prof. Tomlinson’s research within the context of Disability Studies in Education.
