Equity in engineering education is a central concern to those invested in the equal access to opportunity for all of the citizens of the United States. Commensurate with equity goals, engineering builds possible worlds. Literacy, the ability to use representations in engineering communication and problem solving, plays a central role in furthering equity goals in engineering. The assembled scholars unpack central issues and open discussion in this underexplored field by using diverse methodologies to investigate diverse educational settings that serve populations of learners historically marginalized in engineering education and professions in the United States. This submission will include presentations from attendees of the Literacies in Engineering for Access and Participation (LEAP) Conference held in San Antonio, TX May, 2017.
