Session Summary

The Writing Was on the Wall: Dismantling the White Hegemonic Alliance in the Trump Era

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Fourth Floor, Hudson Suite

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Although many liberals were shocked at the election of Donald J. Trump, the writing was on the wall. Whites did what they needed to do at the polls to preserve whiteness. This panel features papers that delve into the concept of the White Hegemonic Alliance (Allen, 2008) and particularly interrogates how this alliance is perpetuated and resisted within intimate spaces like family and the educational work and resistance that happens in the family and in the classroom, particularly given the enwhitened epistemology (Matias & Newlove, 2017) that dominates along with Trump.
