Session Summary

Developing Innovative Assessments of 21st-Century Skills: Online Inquiry and Collaboration

Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 6:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fourth Floor, Odets

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Proficiency with 21st Century skills is essential for successful participation in today’s global, networked society. Two particularly critical competencies for academic and professional success include online inquiry and collaborative problem solving. In this symposium, we present ongoing work from national and international efforts to research and develop large-scale assessments designed to provide valid evidence of students’ proficiency with two complex constructs: online inquiry and collaborative problem solving. Specifically, one project measures individual students’ online inquiry skills within multiple-document comprehension tasks, two projects examine assessment of individual students’ collaborative skills in the context of collaborative problem solving tasks, and a final project aims to integrate measures of online inquiry and collaboration within a single environment. Implications for assessment are discussed.
