Session Type: Symposium
This session will present papers on interventions related to student homelessness and education in New York City. We begin by discussing the results of an initiative to provide Social Workers to schools serving high numbers of homeless students. We then explore one elementary school’s efforts to partner with a number of community organizations to support its homeless population. We also explore one shelter organization’s model to build partnerships with nearby schools to support its youth residents. Finally, we look at a local foundation’s strategy to provide dollars, the positive impacts of connecting school and shelter initiatives, and challenges of funding intersectional work. Overall, this session expands understanding of the critical nature of intra-and inter-organizational collaboration in supporting students experiencing homelessness.
