Session Type: Symposium
This panel challenges traditional perspectives used to research college access and choice that fail to account for the colonial schooling structures (Patel, 2015) and racist neoliberal education policies (Stovall, 2016) experienced by historically marginalized student populations. This panel uses interdisciplinary lenses to examine the role of power within college access. The session entails presentations that challenge deficit notions of Indigenous, Latinx, and Undocumented student postsecondary pathways through asset-based theoretical frameworks and/or empirical research studies. The discussion will highlight that Asian American students, Black students, Students with dis/abilities and other student groups must also be acknowledged within such a session. In other words, the groups discussed here are not totalizing, but rather specific.
