Session Type: Symposium
After years of organizing Martínez v. State of New Mexico, the nine-week trial began June 12, 2017. Deemed the most comprehensive law suit in the nation, Martínez has 51 plaintiffs (students and their parents) determined to revitalize the dream that their forefathers established in the state constitution, one that in the 106 year history of the state has yet to be honored. New Mexico, with almost 75% students of color, is the only state in the nation with a Hispanic Education Act and Indian Education Act, yet throughout its history the state has failed to educate its children, consistently ranking 49th or 50th in education. Research findings, expert testimony, court rulings and trial updates will be discussed in this symposium.
