Session Summary

Outside Curriculum—Necessary for Public Education: Dreaming Possibilities, Starting With China

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 10:15am, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Third Floor, Room 3.11

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The idea of outside curriculum (Schubert, 2010ab) calls for focus on the myriad intersecting spheres of non-school learning in an effort to be better positioned to relate to students in schools by building on their perspectives derived from those outside curricula. It also advocates study of what is learned from outside curricula in order to learn more perspectives that result from education in and out of school. Presenters from China share insight and pose questions about the value of understanding and developing outside curricula. Outside curricular contexts presented include Chinese ethnic minority communities, migrant worker communities, remote rural areas, extracurricular and enrichment activities, and youth social media. Intellectual salons and teacher education approaches are offered to stimulate work on outside curriculum.
