Session Summary

Art As Protest, Resistance, and Social Movement: Artist-Activists Respond to the Racial Violence in and Around Schools

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Gramercy Room East

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

In our current political state, there has been a direct assault on the arts and humanities and they are being devalued and underappreciated in and around schools. In contrast, art allows us to speak truth to power—and when connected with activism, artistic expressions allow us to use its many forms as protest and social mobility. New York has been a historic space for artist-activists to convene to define themselves, resist oppression and strive toward social change. In this special session, artist activists, including poets, spoken word artists, and children’s writers will come together to share their creativities and how their art has served to resist and “clap back” to the political and racially violent assaults to youth and communities.
