Session Summary

Off-Site Visit. The NBA Workplace: Dreams, Possibilities and the Workplace Beyond the Basketball Court

Fri, April 13, 10:30am to 1:30pm, The New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden, 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY

Session Type: Off-Site Visit

Abstract

Hoop Dreams are a goal for many students, especially in communities with socio-economically challenged students (Joravsky, 1996). Even with exceptional talent, many find this is not reality in the real world (Macdonald & Cousins, 2011). This workplace visit will explore the many opportunities beyond the basketball court for students and the role the National Basketball Association (NBA) has played with supporting Public Education to showcase prospective careers and the importance of solid workplace training (Cervero & Wilson, 2005) within their organizations for career, social and professional development. This exploration includes the review of the complexities between the transfer of cultural, individualized, and specialized knowledge between education and the workplace setting (Eraut, 2009).
