Session Summary

At the Intersection of Civil Rights and Public Education: Classrooms, Communities, and Research Methodologies

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Westin New York at Times Square, Floor: Ninth Floor, Palace Room

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

The Division D Equity and Inclusion Committee organizes a panel of speakers during the annual conference each year; the invited speakers discuss equity, inclusion, and social justice in relation to educational measurement and research methodologies.

The session for the 2018 annual meeting focuses on community-based researchers who have, for decades, been interested in understanding and addressing the intersection of civil rights and education. Those in attendance will employ a range of research methods, including measurement and assessment, quantitative and statistical methods, qualitative methods, and mixed methods.

The session is unique because it leverages a wide range of community-based researchers from New York City civil rights organizations, nearby urban communities, and other scholars doing similar work around the country.
