Division B Fireside Chat. Reimagining Curriculum Studies in the Age of Shrinking Public Education and Privatization

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Sixth Floor, Room 6.01

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

For this fireside chat, we ask the following critical question: How can we reimagine curriculum studies in the age of shrinking public education and ruthless privatization? Ravitch (2013) warned us about the dangers of an aggressive privatization of education. This movement is the result of the current standardization of learning, which narrows curriculum and limits critical thinking (Ravitch, 2013). Curriculum studies have been a hallmark of public education. However, pushing the boundaries and possibilities of curriculum in various communities is no easy battle. This battle will continue to be difficult with the ever increasing threats to public education. We hope that the invited scholars will help us think to through these issues as graduate students developing our own research agendas.
