This literature review examines the existing literature on principal supervisors as executive coaches for principals’ instructional leadership development. Honig’s (2012) socio-cultural learning perspective for the work of principal supervisors was used as a theoretical framework to analyze the literature on executive coaching. The strategies connected to this theory are purported to be hallmarks of the redesigned role of principal supervisors include: focusing on joint work, modeling, developing and using tools, creating opportunities for principals to be learning resources, and brokering. No studies have used this frame to explicitly investigate executive coaching of principals. Findings show a gap in knowledge on these two topics; however, an overlap in the Honig's strategies and the foundational principals of executive coaching is present.
