Abstract

In recent decades, there has been an increased emphasis on the inclusion of statistics and data analysis in elementary school mathematics. In this paper, we present results of a study of the quality of instruction in 4th and 5th grade lessons focused on data and statistics topics. Using data from a large, multi-year study of mathematics instruction in 4th and 5th grade classrooms across five urban districts, we examine the content and tasks prevalent in these lessons. Next, we discuss the relative quality of data and statistics lessons in the sample compared to lessons focused on other mathematical topics. Finally, we present results from a qualitative analysis of these lessons, illustrating the nature and quality of instruction in more detail.
