Title: The impact of care and capital on Latino male academic achievement in college
Abstract
The proposed paper examines how care and various forms of capital impact the collegiate successes of 10 Latino males from various Latino sub-groups. In this study, care was redefined by drawing on the scholarship of Noddings (2005), Gay, (2010), and others, who articulate critical conceptions of care. Findings highlight care as a resource highway providing participants with access to a variety of capital—i.e., social, familial, aspirational, as well as other important resources (i.e., transition strategies such as code switching and discerning expectations) that they were able to leverage toward their academic achievement in college. Implications for practice and future research are also explored.
