Youth Solidarities Across Borders: Doing Participatory Action Research With Latinx and Indigenous Youth in Toronto

Abstract

The Youth Solidarities Across Borders project is an ongoing extension of Proyecto Latino, which was developed as a response to the educational challenges of Latinx youth in Toronto high schools. This paper will discuss how this current work involves the bringing together of Latinx and Indigenous students to co-develop practices for cultivating relationships of solidarity as well as research and strategies examining the dynamics affecting their academic success. We will discuss the inner workings of the “Youth Solidarities” project and share both tensions that arise in doing YPAR under such circumstances, as well as the possibilities that YPAR can hold for critical pedagogy and relationship-building within the public schooling system.
