Trans Student Narratives of Transitioning While in College

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 4

Abstract

In this study we collected the life stories of five transgender university students who identified as transitioning or who had transitioned. We adapted McAdams’ (2008) life story protocol in order to understand the full context of each participant’s life, and also in order to view each participant as a whole person with multifaceted complexity. Participant stories focused on their dualistic lives between being out on campus and not yet out at home, the importance of supportive or disapproving roommates, the necessity of trans-affirming campus spaces, how imperative family is throughout the transitioning process, and more.
