The Effect of School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS) on the Rate of Office Discipline Referrals for Subgroup Populations

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

Exclusionary discipline practices are used at a higher rate with students from underrepresented populations (McIntosh, Chard, Boland, & Horner, 2011). PBIS has been shown to reduce office discipline referrals (ODRs) in schools. The main hypothesis was when PBIS is implemented with fidelity there is a main effect for years of implementation with fewer ODRs in the fourth year of implementation than in the first year. The second hypothesis was when PBIS is implemented there is a greater reduction in the rate of ODRs for Black and Hispanic students than their White peers. The data for this study came from the OSEP National PBIS Technical Assistance Center. The hypotheses were tested with two two-way within schools ANOVAs.
