The Role of District Staff in Supporting College Counseling: Findings From a Research-Practice Partnership

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 3

Abstract

College counselors play a critical role in providing students and their families most in need with the necessary support to navigate the college application process. Prior research has examined how college counseling varies across states and among schools, but few studies have focused on the role of school districts in shaping college counseling practices. In this paper, we use a case study of one urban school district to describe how district policies and practices shape college counseling in schools. This research contributes to our collective understanding of the different ways central office leaders can help schools improve college counseling. The results also suggest possible strategies for reducing barriers to providing high quality college counseling in urban school districts.
