This study offers a fuller conceptualization of the construct of “equity-mindedness” for faculty, including the importance of movement beyond equity-centered thinking to equity-centered action. Via a narrative approach to the journeys of six faculty members (two members of color, four white members) at a predominantly white institution, the study highlights each individual’s developing identity as an equity agent facing a variety of institutional constraints. Through the application of a critical sensemaking lens, attention is given to the ways that each member internalized key equity language and the ways that this language was used to highlight contradictions in communicating to campus peers. Finally, attention is given to each faculty member’s developing identity as an agent for racial equity.
