The Racial Literacy Framework: Cultivating Racial Understanding and Teacher Education for Racial Justice

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Concourse Level, Concourse D Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher educators have recently taken up a racial literacy framework by promoting the integration of racial concepts and themes into curricular and pedagogical projects used with preservice teachers. Racial literacy work engages preservice teachers in developing a mindset, vocabulary and a set of strategies to address the dynamics of race and racism in their schooling contexts and apply race as a diagnostic tool to develop teacher identities, curriculum and pedagogies from a race-conscious, equity-oriented perspective. This symposium explores the contributions of studies utilizing a race literacy framework across different elements of teacher preparation programs and in diverse field experience settings. Furthermore, the symposium explores how to move forward with the development of a racial literacy framework for teacher education.
