The appointment of Betsy DeVos as United States Secretary of Education has elevated the conversation about the relative merits of different forms of privatization in education (vouchers, charter schools, tax credits, etc.). However, the U.S. dialogue has not fully taken into account the evidence from around the world about the impacts of many different forms of the privatization of education. This panel presents findings from studies in five different geographic regions – North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, as well as a global overview – that reveal the different types of education privatization, how they function within the country and regional context, and, most importantly, the results and implications for students, teachers, and other education stakeholders.
