Active Learning Activities' Effect on the Development of Competencies in STEM Higher Education: A Review

Abstract

Higher education institutions are facing a challenge to adopt and research new approaches to learning. This scoping review provides a current overview of the empirical research concerning active learning activities’ effect on the development of competences in the context of STEM higher education. 81 peer-reviewed research articles (empirical qualitative and quantitative research) related to the research topic were analysed by applying the principles of qualitative content analysis. The initial results indicate that the different active learning activities have had a positive effect especially on the development of cognitive competences, but also on the development of functional, social and meta-competences. Nevertheless, the effect was not only positive as not all learning goals were achieved as was intended.
