Abstract

Online Competency-Based Education (CBE) programs are effective at improving student learning for reasons still fully unexplored in the literature. Innovative institutions can utilize principles from the cognitive sciences to aid in the development of authentic learning assignments in ways that improve learning and increase student outcomes. This paper reviews some of the key cognitive science learning principles currently being incorporated into online CBE programs and explores their usefulness in an online technology-based context.
