Advocating and Surviving: Narratives of Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Public Schools

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Grand Ballroom Suite-West Ballroom

Abstract

Much attention is given to special education equity issues, including achievement gaps, racial/ethnic disproportionality, student discipline, and inclusion. One often ignored issue is the challenges of parents of children with disabilities. The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses and the broad and unique needs of children with ASD necessitate a better understanding of the experiences of parents navigating public schools. This narrative study examines the experiences of parents of school-aged children with ASD. Disabilities Studies (DS) is used to analyze narratives and raise parent voices, because their voices have been marginalized and at times misunderstood by dedicated, but sometimes misguided educators and principals. We conclude with recommendations for research and educator preparation.
