Black Males Using Cultural Wealth as Metacognitive Success Strategies in Community Colleges: A Case Study

Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 2

Abstract

Cultural wealth, grounded in Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth model, aims to self-empower students of color by capturing their unique talents and strengths, paired with environmental factors that help them succeed. This case study explores how community cultural wealth can be used for metacognitive skill development in Black male students across three community colleges. The case describes how Black college men access cultural wealth to enhance their metacognitive success skills when navigating community college environments. Findings suggest that social, familial, and aspirational cultural wealth factors were used as pathways to access and improve metacognitive skills in goal setting, planning, strategy-building, and self-monitoring.
