In this presentation we raise questions of purpose and practice that implicate EE research in the conceptual and methodological movements in wider fields of social and educational research. In our searchings amongst “the ruins” of disruption and reconceptualization, we have been encouraged by trends that have turned toward posthuman and new materialist projects that openly advocate ecological sustainability in theory and praxis. Rather than directly engaging the complex theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of these shifts in thinking about what counts as research, we use examples of inquiries that articulate how environmental education (EE) researchers might take advantage of these new methods, grounded within (or without) emerging theories, methodologies and methods.
