Advancing the Professional Skills of Clinical Teacher Supervisors Through Video-Based Self-Observation

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

Institutions of teacher education routinely hire and engage faculty, both full and part time, in the work of clinical supervision. While the work of supervision—like the work of teaching—requires training, mentoring, and ongoing learning, generally this does not take place. Instead, supervision is seen as “self-evident work” and the act of supervision, being a one-to-one faculty-student event, occurs on the periphery of the institution. Our study focuses on the ways supervisors, who are often highly experienced educators, can use video as a means to examine and enhance their understanding of their practice within a self-empowerment framework.
