Modeling Test-Taking Strategies With an Emphasis on Metacognition

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 1

Abstract

Test scores are one of the most important indicators reflecting student’s performance. However, although tests are designed to assess students’ knowledge or skills, other factors can also affect test results such as test-taking strategies (TTS). Most of the research on TTS so far, has focused on test wiseness (which is a skill that does not necessarily carry over to many life situation), and neglected to address the important role of metacognition and its interplay with the cognitive components that affect test performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationship among self-reported test-taking strategies and performance by focusing on the role of metacognition in the test-taking process.
